When in Rome...Foreign Service Journal Reviews America and the Vatican
January 16, 2012 — Print this Page
The Foreign Service Journal reviewed America and the Vatican by Robert Illing.
In its November review of Bob Illing’s book, reviewer Damian Leader wrote that it “ is an important account of a largely unrecorded chapter in modern U.S. diplomacy.” Leader also noted that America and the Vatican is a “useful corrective for those who question the value of diplomatic relations with the Vatican.”
The reviewer also noted that Illing, who included in his book several anecdotes of American-Vatican relations, noted that “he(Illing) is excellent on Ben Franklin’s successful promotion of his friend John Carrol to lead the U.S. Catholic Church after independence.”
Reviwer Damian Leader is a Foreign Service officer who is the chief arms control delegate at the U.S. mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
